During this current pandemic, that number is likely to increase. That means you’re likely to know someone – a friend, family member or colleague – who is affected or to be affected yourself.
The problem is there’s still a lot of stigma attached to mental health and people shy away from the issue. All too often when colleagues, friends or family are experiencing this type of mental distress, they don’t feel comfortable talking about it – they feel that shouldn’t ask about suicide, that they don’t know what to say or how to respond if someone is having those feelings.
About the course
QPR has been running since 1995. It is included in the US National Registry of Evidence-based Practices and Policies. The course covers:
- How to Question, Persuade and Refer someone who may be suicidal
- How to get help for yourself or learn more about preventing suicide
- The common causes of suicidal behavior
- The warning signs of suicide
- How to get help for someone in crisis
Those who complete the course receive a Gatekeeper certificate which is valid for three years. A gatekeeper is defined as someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide. A QPR-trained Gatekeeper will be able to:
- Recognise the warning signs of suicide
- Know how to offer hope
- Know how to get help and save a life
