Norfolk and Waveney Mind announces appointment of four new patrons
Norfolk and Waveney Mind is delighted to announce the appointment of four new Patrons. This announcement coincides with the launch of the charity’s three-year public strategy and the successful recruitment of new Trustees and Ambassadors.
Mrs Penny Middleditch, Mr Han Yang Yap, Mr Nick Prior and Mr James Bagge have all agreed to become Patrons of Norfolk and Waveney Mind. They will be joining the charity’s long-standing Patrons, Lady Dannatt MBE, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Norfolk and Mr William Armstrong OBE, all offering to lend their support to raise awareness, help raise funds and share the importance of mental wellbeing.
Penny Middleditch MA (Cantab) practised as a solicitor with Linklaters in London before coming to Norwich to join Mills & Reeve in 1986 where she worked on and off for 5 years before retiring from legal practice to raise her 4 children.

Between 1993 and 2015 Penny carried out a variety of pro bono work: including tax commissioner, CAB advisor, Samaritan, Responsible Adult (supporting and advising young and vulnerable people when taken into police custody). Penny has also been Chairman, trustee and company secretary for Broadlands Riding for Disabled (specialising in riding for adults with learning and physical disabilities) and Chairman, trustee and company secretary for Great Yarmouth and Waveney Mind before it merged to become part of Norfolk and Waveney Mind. Penny has lived in Catfield, a small Broadland village, for 34yrs and has 4 adult children.

Mr Han Yang Yap qualified as a solicitor in Singapore, Hong Kong and the UK.  He practised at Freshfields before joining Reuters as General Counsel Asia based in Hong Kong.  He actively supports the arts in Norfolk.  In 2011, he collaborated with the Norfolk and Norwich Festival in staging one of the highlight events of the Festival that year.  He now sits on the Board of Trustees of the Theatre Royal Norwich.  He is also involved in fundraising for his local Parochial Church Council and the Norfolk Churches Trust. He is currently a Deputy Lieutenant.

Mr Nick Prior is an Entrepreneur (Minderful) and Doctor (NHS) who brings experience from a Physics degree, 7,000-mile solo bike ride and the KPMG graduate scheme. He currently splits his time between Core Psychiatry Training & Minderful. As a Doctor he cares deeply about his clinical work but is acutely aware of the greater potential impact of social enterprise - hence Minderful. He is Norfolk born and bred and cannot wait to start his work as a Patron.

Mr James Bagge is Norfolk born and bred. Commissioned into the Blues and Royals serving in the early 1970s in Northern Ireland, Cyprus and Australia, the latter as ADC to the Governor of South Australia. Called to the Bar in 1979 and practised at the Criminal Bar for 10 years and then seconded to the Serious Fraud Office. Thereafter became a partner at the international law firm Norton Rose for 18 years. On retirement from the partnership he started a consultancy specialising in Board Effectiveness. He is a former High Sheriff of Norfolk and currently a Deputy Lieutenant. He is also the Ambassador for the Love West Norfolk initiative. He has twice walked over 1000 miles to Santiago di Compostela raising money for the Unpaid Carers. He is patron of two youth charities in West Norfolk, Open Road in Kings Lynn and the Swan Youth Project in Downham Market.
Current Patrons, Lady Dannatt MBE, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Norfolk and Mr William Armstrong OBE, issued a joint statement in response to this latest announcement: “We are delighted to welcome Penny, Han Yang, Nick and James to Norfolk and Waveney Mind. They will help make such a difference to how the charity can influence and change the landscape of mental health services and promote a more informed and compassionate understanding of the plight of those unfortunate enough to be living with mental health conditions across Norfolk and Waveney.”
Louise Jordan-Hall, Chair of the Board of Trustees at Norfolk and Waveney Mind, said: “We really value the support and expertise that our new Patrons, Trustees and Ambassadors will bring to our charity and are delighted to make this announcement to coincide with the launch of our three year public strategy which focusses on community wellbeing, crisis resolution and preventative practices.
“The launch of our strategy, combined with these appointments is just the start of our journey towards achieving our ambition that ‘No one should have to face poor mental health alone and that with the right support and resources anybody can create a life that feels meaningful.’  To achieve our ambition, we will continue to work in partnership with lots of people and organisations, including our volunteers, campaigners, supporters, donors and people who access our services.”
