1 in 5 people will experience serious thoughts of suicide during their lifetime. Loss of life to suicide is of national concern – it’s the leading cause of death in several population groups – and the evidence is that it’s preventable.

During this current pandemic, the number are likely to increase. That means you’re likely to know someone – a friend, family member or colleague – who is affected or to be affected yourself.

The problem is there’s still a lot of stigma attached to mental health and people shy away from the issue. All too often when colleagues, friends or family are experiencing mental distress, they don’t feel comfortable talking about it – they feel that shouldn’t ask about suicide, that they don’t know what to say or how to respond if someone is having those feelings.

About the course

QPR has been running since 1995. It is included in the US National Registry of Evidence-based Practices and Policies. The course covers:

• How to Question, Persuade and Refer someone who may be suicidal
• Learning about preventing suicide
• Understanding the thinking behind thoughts of suicide
• Engaging empathically with someone in crisis
• How to support someone in crisis by creating a safety plan
• Signposting to appropriate resources

Those who complete the course receive a Gatekeeper certificate which is valid for three years. A gatekeeper is defined as someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide. A QPR-trained Gatekeeper will be able to:

• Recognise the warning signs of suicide
• Know how to offer hope
• Know how to get help and save a life
